Mining Traces from Dynamic Complex Systems Models Simulations: an application to the Cultaptation social learning competition

A Complex System is often described as featuring a large number of interacting components, whose aggregate activity is nonlinear and typically exhibits hierarchical self-organization under selective pressures, be it simulated or in the real world. A recent tournament in social learning called Cultaptation has attracted more than a hundred researcher who devised strategies that are currently pitted against each other in a series of evolutionary computer simulations. In this paper we address the problem of mining large amount of data produced by the traces of large complex multi-agent simulations such as Cultaptation. We propose an original visualization approach implemented as a Cytoscape plug-in to abstract meaningful information from the vast traces describing the dynamic interactions of the evolutionary computer simulations. This work paves the way for new approaches to better tune multi-agent systems, which is still an open problem.
